Your Dreams is an ode to one’s particular longings coming from a place of starry-eyed purity. In Evripidis’ words: “This is a song about trying to overcome your fears and hesitations, about struggling to leave a suffocating situation be it a family, a relationship, a job, a city, and move on, although you might not even know what exactly you are aiming for. I certainly didn’t have any particular dreams written in stone, neither do I have now. It is a song about yearning abstractly for something better.”
It was initially conceived as a Lennon-esque piano ballad back in 2013. Evripidis was staying in New York at that point, giving the finishing touches to Futile Games in Space and Time LP, mingling with the scene and falling in love with the city, knowing though that this romance was doomed to be short-lived. He was also struggling with a personal shortcomings. The lyrics reflect the yearning for change and are both melancholic and empowering, mirroring Evripidis’ own history when he left his hometown Athens to go to Barcelona but also his ever-evolving inner conflicts and his postponing attitude.
Upon returning to Barcelona, Evripidis shelved the song for a few years until he started re-working it with his partner Marc Ribera in 2016, this time at home, using software. It was one of the first songs where he stepped outside his usual piano-driven, multi-instrumental pop to quest for a new sound, one that could develop without too much external aid. Inspired by metronomic Kraut-rock and early electro pop, he played all the keyboards, did all the arrangements, then gave the song to Sergio Pérez to add his warm, analogue synth textures. In the end of the process he invited Rachel Kenedy from dream-pop ensemble Flowers to sing along, adding the final magic to the mix and a second point of view.
