about

Bitter is an energetic synth-pop tune, inspired by the minimal wave of the early 80’s but with a contemporary touch. It uses tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic language to reflect on the capricious, ever-fleeting nature of romance and declare that being bitter is an undesirable state of mind, although a very possible option, given the hardship one faces while in quest for love. Evripidis gave the song some queer pizzazz by making it a duet with Greg from NYC gay indie pop duo The Ballet

In Evripidis' words: "I wanted to convey a little bit of the feeling that The Smiths songs gave me when I was younger-this mixture of romanticism, cynicism and humor that is kind of camp but also deeply heartfelt. I am after all bitter and hopeful, grumpy and funny, all together at the same time, and I wanted to connect with those who feel these strong contradictions. I invited Greg to sing with me because I imagined an encounter of two like-minded souls who never give up on love. "

True to Evripidis’ recent work ethics, far from the multi-instrumentalist approach he used to have, the song was arranged at home by him and his partner Marc Ribera from Spanish indie pop ensemble Doble Pletina, then handed out to Sergio Perez from Spanish synth-pop duet SVPER to be produced and mixed. Evripidis played all synths and Sergio played the electric guitar. Greg Goldberg added his vocals later.

Bitter features in Neos Kosmos, Evripidis and His Tragedies’ forthcoming LP.

lyrics

Well, it must be our high hopes
The reason we end up always let down
Or an elusive sense of pride
That takes us for a ride on rocky roads

Whenever we give out our hearts
We truly think that it could last forever
They always come back full of cracks
We fill them up with plaster and go on bravely

We don’t want to be bitter
People who’re cynical and grim
We don’t want to be some non-believers
But it’s hard as nails sometimes

We always end up wondering
Why Mr.Cupid is such a shady prick
Why love has to be a war zone
Where power, corruption and lies intertwine?

We don’t want to be bitter
People who’re cynical and grim
We don’t want to be some non-believers
But it’s hard, a can of worms

Often we swear that we're done with this game
Then we see a face and it's all the same
Every lesson learned, it's magically forgotten

We don’t want to be bitter
People who’re cynical and grim
We don’t want to be some non-believers
Though it’s hard
It’s so hard

We don’ t want to be bitter
We don’t want to be bitter
We don’t want to be bitter
No, we don’t want to be bitter

Evripidis and his Tragedies Barcelona, Spain

Evripidis and His Tragedies is Evripidis Sabatis. The "Tragedies" are the devastating, confessional, self-sarcastic, darkly humorous songs that draw on his classical piano training, queer sensibility and storytelling skills to examine and own up to the vicissitudes of life. Evripidis' pop inclinations take us for a bumpy, dancey ride across the fine line between tragedy and joie de vivre. ... more
